6 Foods to Never Feed Your Dachshund

It may come as a surprise to you that there are several foods that are healthy and safe for human consumption but are very dangerous for your doxie.  When those big puppy dog eyes are looking up at you and begging for human food, keep these foods in mind before sharing.

Alcohol

It should go without saying that alcohol is an absolute no no for your furry friend. Alcohol of any kind can cause diarrhea, vomiting, breathing problems, tremors, coma or even death. Make sure to put that glass of wine out of reach…cause we all know how crafty those little wieners can be.

Caffeine, Coffee & Chocolate

All of these products contain a substance called methylxanthines. Methylxanthines are toxic to dogs. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Also, darker chocolate contains more concentrated levels of methylxanthines and are in turn more harmful to your four legged friend.

Grapes & Raisins

While they make great snacks for humans, grapes and raisins can seriously harm your dog. Although the reason why is unknown, this fruit is toxic to your dachshund. Grapes (fresh or dried) can causes kidney damage and failure, which is life threatening.

Nuts

The high amount of oil and fats found in nuts (including almonds, pecans, and walnuts), can cause vomiting and diarrhea. There is also a risk of your doxie developing pancreatitis.

Macadamia Nuts in particular are harmful to your dog. It can cause weakness, vomiting, depression, tremors and hyperthermia within 12-48 hours of ingestion.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used to sweeten many products, such as chewing gum, toothpaste, and even peanut butter! When ingested in causes an insulin spike, which can lead to liver failure. The early signs of toxicosis include lethargy, loss of coordination, and vomiting. This can quickly progress to seizures and liver failure within a few days. So, make sure to check you Peanut Butter label for Xylitol before treating your dachshund.

Yeast Dough

Yeast dough can rise and cause large amounts of gas in your pet’s digestive system. Besides the discomfort from bloating, the yeast can cause your doxie’s stomach to twist, which is a life threatening emergency. The raw dough can also produce the byproduct ethanol, which may cause drunkenness, another dangerous side effect. (See alcohol).
