5 Ways to Reward your Dachshund without Food

We live in a culture that revolves around food…whether we are celebrating, mourning, or just gathering with family or friends, food is usually at the center. Our pets are the same…they love to eat!! When your doxie looks up at you with those sad puppy dog eyes, it’s hard to resist the urge to give them just one more treat. Unfortunately, Dachshunds are prone to overeating and obesity, which can cause major health problems.

I mean has your dachshund ever said, “No, thanks mom, I’ll pass on the treat today.” LOL…I don’t think so! So, as responsible pet parents we have to make the choice to show our doxies love in other ways. In an effort to help, we came up with five ideas of how to reward your dachshund without adding to their waistline.

1. Go for a walk

Go for a walk at a local dog park or around your neighborhood. Your dog needs exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Regular walking will help your doxie live a longer, happier life.

2. Playtime

Get down on the floor and play tug-o-war with their favorite toy. Your dachshund wants you to play and rough house with them. Especially if they are an only dog, you are their best friend 🙂

3. Belly rubs!

Give your doxie a good belly rub and back scratch. This is such a great way to show your doggy how much you love them! Just like humans…pups need that physical touch.

4. Learn a new trick

Take the time to teach your doxie a trick (hand shake or roll over) This is a fun way to spend time with your dachshund. Make sure to be patient with your furry friend…give them grace to learn over time.

5. Quality Time

Give you dachshund 100% of your attention for 5 full minutes. Your dog craves your time and attention. If they go crazy when you come home…that is their way of telling you how much they love you!
